Dr. Aurangzeb Khan from COMSATS University in Islamabad, Pakistan, returns to UMD for the Spring Semester 2015. At the Clark Engineering School he will teach graduate project management students his elective course on his field of specialization and research - Project Stakeholder Management and Engagement - which he developed and introduced at his parent university COMSATS back in the fall semester 2008.
This course is one of a handful of courses on the subject being offered at graduate level in project management degree programs across the globe. Dr. Khan states that “stakeholders are the most important factor in any project. They lie at the very core of projects – in fact projects are conceived, initiated, planned, executed, completed and monitored and evaluated by stakeholders for stakeholders. Hence, a thorough understanding of stakeholders and the various forces which influence their conduct and behavior on projects are of supreme interest and relevance. The enormous surge in interest in recent years among both academics and practitioners regarding project stakeholders and ways and means of effectively managing and engaging them clearly reflects this”.
Dr. Khan previously spent one year (2010-11) at UMD as a Visiting Scholar under the Fulbright Exchange Program where, in addition to working on his research project, he had the privilege of teaching his stakeholder course to twenty graduate project management students. For his effort he received excellent feedback. He will return again to teach at UMD in fall semester 2017 or spring semester 2018. Given his infrequent visits to UMD, Dr. Khan strongly urges current graduate students to enroll in his course for which two batches have been created.
Dr. Khan is the recipient of his country’s national Best Teacher Award 2007 and he pioneered the introduction of the Master of Project Management (MPM) at COMSATS in 2008 which was Pakistan’s first project management degree program. He is presently engaged in an extensive research collaboration on project stakeholder management and engagement with his colleagues UMD Professors Miroslaw Skibniewski and John Cable in the Clark School’s Project Management Center for Excellence.
